Good morning everyone!

Well done for yesterday: there was some excellent research conducted into what life was like in Ancient Egypt. Remember that we are looking at a period of Egyptian history from about 6,000BC to 300BC, so much of what you have learned about modern Egypt (such as the language spoken and religious beliefs) won't be the same.

Friday 22nd January 2021

Good morning everyone!

It looks like another beautiful morning, with lots of sunshine. I wonder if you have seen any signs of Spring yet; I have noticed the first few daffodil and snowdrop bulbs pushing their way through the soil this week.

Today you have Maths, Reading, SPaG and PE to complete. For your reading stamina today, try to read for at least 30 minutes, even if you have to break it up into smaller sessions (although I'm sure when you're enjoying your book, time will fly by). Remember that in PE, your aim should be to exercise for a full hour, just like you would were you at school.

Have a great day and I will see you all at 9:15.

Mr Balkan

Thursday 21st January 2021

Good morning Chestnut class!

What a lovely, bright and sunny day -  it looks like the strong winds have blown away all of yesterday's clouds. Please make sure you seize the opportunity and get outside at some point today to enjoy it.

You have Maths, Reading, English and Art to complete today. In Maths, you are continuing to explore percentages and how percentages relate to the whole. In English, you are brushing up on your prepositions (think about a cat in, under, next to, beside a box). In Art, you are producing more observational drawing today, albeit with a focus on textures this time. When it comes to drawing from your composition, you must remember to start with lots of light, loose construction lines - don't expect to reproduce what you can see straight away!

Have a great day and I hope to see you all at 9:15 for our morning meeting.

Mr Balkan

Wednesday 20th January 2021

Good morning everyone!

Here is today's work. You have English, Reading, Maths and PSHE to complete. In Maths you are moving on to calculating percentages of amounts and in English you are exploring techniques for developing more cohesive writing.

See you at 9:15 for our morning meeting.

Mr Balkan

Tuesday 19th January 2021

Good morning everyone,

Well done for working hard yesterday. I was very impressed with some of your writing in your Science reports; just as with any other text type, writing these reports is a skill that improves with practice.

Today you have Maths, Reading, English and Science to complete. In English, you are required to write a diary entry from the point of view of a character in a story. Try to really immerse yourself in their character and think about all the things you would be hearing, seeing, thinking and feeling.

See you all at 9:15 for our meeting.

Mr Balkan

Monday 18th January 2021

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a lovely weekend and had some fun in the snow.

Today you have Handwriting, Maths, Reading and Science to complete. In Handwriting, you will need to write up the English you produced last week, as we would when publishing it at school. Remember to read any feedback carefully and make changes as appropriate.

See you at 9:15 for our meeting!

Mr Balkan

Friday 15th January 2021

See you all at 9:15 for our Google Meet.

Wednesday 13th January 2021

Good morning everyone!

Well done for yesterday - you all had some lovely ideas in your English planning and I can't wait to start reading what you produce today.

I hope you are enjoying StitchHead - does it remind you of any other stories you have read or heard before?

I hope to see you for this morning's meeting at 9:15. Remember, the link will only be posted on the Google Classroom stream from now on.

 Have a great day!

Mr Balkan

Tuesday 12th January 2021

Good morning everyone,

Well done for handing in your work yesterday - I really enjoyed looking at it. Your learning today includes multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 in maths; planning your own potion in English; reading chapter 4 of Stitch Head (again) and answering questions and finally, some human and physical geography work exploring Egypt.

Don't forget that we will be having two Google Meets a day. The first is at our normal time (9:15 to 9:30). The second will be at 12:15 to 12:30.

The link to our Google Meets will no longer be posted here - you must log in to Google Classroom to access the link.

I look forward to seeing you all shortly.

Mr. Balkan

Monday 11th January 2021

Good morning everyone!

I hope you had a good weekend - the frosty mornings were especially beautiful, I thought, and it was nice to get some lovely warming sunshine for a change as well.

This week I am in school, looking after a bubble so unfortunately I might not be as quick to respond to any queries in the class stream as I was last week. Don't worry, however! I will still be checking what you do and giving some feedback.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
We shall be having two Google Meets a day from today onward. The first is at our normal time (9:15 to 9:30). The second will be at 12:15 to 12:30. You can think about these like our morning and afternoon registration times; I will be keeping a register for both.

You might have noticed that the subjects have been separated too. This will allow you to submit each subject separately and should mean that you get feedback from me sooner. I will also be keeping a note of which subjects you complete each day. It is important that you try and complete the work as thoroughly as you would at school - be very careful not to skip questions and make sure you use full sentences.

See you at 9:15!

Have a great day!

Mr Balkan

Good morning,

Here is today's work. Instead of English, you have a SPaG lesson today.

I have also recorded myself reading the book, starting with the prologue (which we skipped over). If you would like to hear any of the chapters we have read so far, please follow the Loom links found on our Google Classroom stream.

For PE lessons, you will be doing a combination of yoga (for flexibility) and Joe Wicks workouts (for fitness). In today's PE lesson you will carry out some assessments of your flexibility and heart rate to record your starting points. Then, in the final PE lesson, you will repeat the assessments and see if you have become fitter.

As far as I know, everyone was (eventually) able to access our meeting in the morning. We will meet at 9:15 again this morning until 9:30; I will post the link around 9:10ish. As ever, if you have any difficulties today, please let me know in the stream, with a description of what happened.

The link for our meeting this morning is:

https://meet.google.com/lookup/gdykmlthib

Have a great day and well done for getting through your first week of online learning!

Mr Balkan

Quick note - the answer to the inference reading question is on PAGE 31 not PAGE 34!

Good morning,

Here is today's work.

We will have another meeting this morning at 9:15 until 9:30. I will put the links up at 9:10. If you are still having difficulty accessing these meetings, try again today but make sure that:

1) You are signed in to your Google Classroom account first.

2) You click the link that I post on the stream, rather than the link at the top of the page.

Fingers crossed this will enable you to access the meeting but, if you are still unable to do so, please let me know in the stream with an explanation of what happened/what it said when you tried to join.

I hope you are enjoying Stitch Head. As well as Reading, Maths and English, you will have a PSHE task for today. Loom links are available on our Google Classroom stream.

The link to our Google Meet is:

https://meet.google.com/lookup/drsxyan3x6

Have a great day!

Mr Balkan

Good morning!

Here is today's work. Rather than combine all the different subjects, each of today's subjects (English, Maths, Reading and Science) have their own slideshow. Miss Pender, Mrs Carter and I have all recorded videos talking through the different slideshows using a program called Loom. The links to the Loom videos for the different subjects are posted on our Google Classroom stream - it is important that you watch them.

We are starting to read our new class text: Stitch Head by Guy Bass. I hope you enjoy it!

Finally, we will have another meeting at 9:15 until 9:30 on Google Meets for registration and talking about today's work. If you couldn't access yesterday's meeting for any reason, try again today and if you still can't access it, let me know by sending a message.

The link for this morning's meeting is:https://meet.google.com/lookup/hdw4gdl4zm

Best wishes, Mr Balkan

Good morning Chestnut Class!

The link for our meeting is: https://meet.google.com/lookup/bzwascx7ov

The meeting will begin at 9:15 and finish at 9:30. We must be prompt with timings as there is a timetable for the different class meetings.

See you then!

Mr Balkan

Dear Chestnut Class,

Good morning and Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely Christmas break.

For today, there is a slideshow of activities for you to complete, all based on a story by Guy Bass, the author of this half-term’s class text. I would recommend you start by listening to him read his book ‘Gormy Ruckles, Monster Boy’ before moving on to the activities. You can complete the work on loose paper today (such as on printer paper or in a notebook), ready to bring into school when we next reconvene. Maths answers are available on a separate slideshow.

Have a great day! Mr Balkan
