Cedar Class

Welcome to Cedar Class

Classteacher:  Mrs. E. Harrington

Friday 7th July 2023

We have been busy learning a new text map this week; a persuasive letter written from Polar Bear to his mother.  We have learned actions to help us remember the text and found the persuasive features in it.  Next week we will learn to write our own persuasive letters.  In Maths, we have been recording and comparing mass.  We then looked at solving problems and reasoning about weight and mass.

In Science we looked at the journey and processes that food goes through from the farm to the supermarket.  Some of us were quite shocked at the number of steps that milk went through before it arrives at our supermarkets!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Mrs. Harrington :)

What a busy week we have had!  We very much enjoyed our Art lessons where we created portraits inspired by Picasso.  I hae included some photos below for you to see.  All the children also took part in 'Class Swap Week' and were SUPER in their new classes and I enjoyed hearing how excited they were by meeting their new teachers and the transition activities that they completed.  Miss. Lee and Mrs. Watts commented on the wonderful behaviour and enthusiasm of the children - well done Cedar Superstars!

Friday 23rd June 2023

What a busy week it's been in Cedar Class!  We all very much enjoyed our Sports Day on Monday.  Well done to team Netherlands!  Jack and Freddie were keen to celebrate their win as you will see in the photos below.  We have been working with length and height in Maths this week and all the children have shown a super understanding of this.  In English the children all wrote fact files for imaginary animals they had created.  The children's imagination was excellent and they all produced informative fact files on a range of creatures, including a Crocobra, a Foxodile and a Kitguin!  Are you able to guess what animals these were inspired by?

Have a super weekend,

Mrs. Harrington

Sports Day June 2023

Our Sports Day is Monday 19th June.  Please ensure your child has their PE Kit in school (inlcuding suitable footwear), a sunhat and a water bottle.  Also, please ensure any earrings and jewellery are removed and long hair is tied back.  Thank you for your support with this.

As we come to the end of another busy half term we have been reflecting on how much we have accomplished and how proud we are of ourselves and the progress we have made.  This week have have enjoyed seeing the results of our science investigation and writing conclusions which reflected on whether our initial predictions were correct or not.  We have also learned a new text map in English, ready for our return after the holidays. I have included some photos below of the children learning the actions to the fact file 'The Forest Giants'.

I hope you have a super half term holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 6th June 2023.

Cedar class have had a busy week! We have conducted science investigations, explored the differences between seeds and bulbs and learned to tell the time to quarter past the hour amongst many other things! As always, Cedar class have approached all their learning with a fantastic attitude and have been thoroughly amazing!

Next week, we are looking forward to seeing the results of our bean seed investigation.  We recorded the first of our results today and some people may have had to change their prediction based on what has happened so far!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Harrington

Friday 12th May 2023

I have been so impressed with how well the children have worked on their shared stories in English this week!  Despite it being a shorter week, they have still achieved so much and have all been listening carefully to ways to improve their writing even further.

In History we looked at a range of artefacts that were discovered in Tutenkhamun's tomb.  We created observational drawings of these artefacts.  The children were really proud of their work and all their pictures will be displayed in the classroom.  I'm sure they will be very keen to show when you are next in school!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Harrington

Friday 5th May 2023

The children have had a busy week.  We have worked hard to produce beautiful prints in Art to display in the corridor.  We linked our work to our main class text 'The Fox and the Star'.  I have included some photos below of the printing process as well as the finished display for you to enjoy.

In Maths we have been working on 'giving change'.  We have used subtraction to do this and the children used a variety of mental and written strategies to support them.

The children learned about Howard Carter this week in History and why he is a significant person in History.  We will continue our learning in coming weeks to discover what was found inside Tutenkhamun's tomb!

Wishing you all a good Bank Holiday weekend.

Friday 31st March 2023

What an amazing half term we have had in Cedar Class.  As usual, everyone has worked incredibly hard and I am so proud of how much progress everyone has made and what a fantastic attitude the children continue to have towards their learning.

This week was safety week and we have been learning about staying safe at home.  The children have all created posters to demonstrate their learning which they shared with each other.   We enjoyed an assembly from the Fire and Police Service which helped secure our learning.

After such a busy half term, everyone deserves a well-earned break.  I hope you have a wonderful Easter break and I look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 18th April.

Friday 24th March 2023

Cedar class have had a super week, and given their all to everything we did this week!  A particular highlight was our Design Technology lesson where we were able to follow our designs and make a fruit kebab. I have put some pictures of us making them and the finished products below.

We also have explored a variety of maps to explore how physical and human features of Myland have changed over the years.  We looked at map symbols to help us draw our comparisions.

Have a lovely weekend Cedar class!

Friday 17th March 2023

This week we have worked hard to understand unit-fractions and non-unit fractions.  We also consolidated our learning of halves, quarters and thirds.  Well done Cedar!

In English we have planned our discussions for our shared writing.  We will be discussing if the Stinky Cheese Man a good character.  We have planned arguments for and against and will write our discussions next week.

In Science, all children were confident when we looked at the stages of human growth and in Art we created portraits in the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Have a great weekend Cedar!

Friday 10th March 2023

We have had a super week in Cedar Class.  We have worked hard to be able to find quarters of shapes and quantities and are beginning to master this now!   In English we have been learning a new text map which is a discussion based on 'Should the Big Bad Wolf be sent to jail?'.  I have included some photos below of the children learning the text map earlier this week.  Everyone always works enthusiastically to learn a new model text as you will see!  In science we conducted an investigation to answer the question 'Does the shortest person in class have the smallest feet?'.  Ask your children what our results were and what conclusions they drew - we were surprised by our findings!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Harrington

World Book Day 2023

Friday 24th February 2023

What a busy week we have had in Cedar class.  The children have worked so hard and I am so proud of what superstars they have been!  We have continued our learning about how to write an effective diary entry and concluded our work on multiplication and division.  We have also started new topics in Design Technology and Geography.  I have put some photos below of the children creating maps that show a range of physical and human features. The children were so enthusiastic during this task and each map was so unique in the features the children chose to include!

Have a wonderful weekend Cedar class!

Friday 3rd February 2023

What a busy and varied week we have had in Cedar Class!  We have worked so hard on our suspense stories and I am so proud of their final outcomes.  I've had to read some very scary stories!  In Maths, we have been solving multiplication problems using repeated addition to help us and once again I am so proud of how well the children are listening and taking on board new concepts.  We all enjoyed our collaborative art work, creating a tie dyed sheet, which you will be able to see up on display along with our other artwork from the term, next time you are in school.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday 27th January 2023

Cedar Class have had yet another busy week!  In Maths we have started learning about multiplication.  We have used arrays and grouping to support our understanding and I have been impressed by how well everyone has worked on this new concept.   In History, we continued to track Queen Elizabeth II's reign by exploring the 1960's.  The children explored a range of sources of information to gather their facts about this decade and shared their findings in a mini class presentations.  Everyone had something to share and did so well!

Have a great weekend Cedar Class!

Friday 20th January 2023

It's been another busy week in Cedar Class!  In English we have been exploring ways to create suspense in our writing and adapting our model text to create our own suspense filled extracts.  In Maths we have been working on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s from any number, both forwards and backwards.  Backwards is definitely a challenge still, but we are working on it!  We have really enjoyed our weaving in our art lessons - look out for these on display in the coming weeks.  In science we explored using a range of forces to change the shape of a material.  We conducted group investigations and each group decided how to record their findings.  I have included some photos of the investigation below.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday 13th January 2023

Cedar Class have been amazing this week!  We have worked so hard and achieved so much in the first full week back at school.  We have begun learning our new model text in English from 'Hansel and Gretel'.  We are exploring ways in which suspense is created in the text and already the children can tell you ways in which you can make a reader feel nervous or excited about what's to come in a story!  In Art we explored the history of weaving ahead of an exciting session next week where we will weave our own textiles.  In History we started a new topic where we are exploring the decades of Queen Elizabeth's reign and looking at changes within our living memory.  This week we began to explore the 1950's - the children were amazed at how different schools were back then!

Have a great weekend.

Friday 6th January 2023

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break, it has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school.  Everyone has settled in brilliantly and we have already achieved so much! We have spent some time exploring what it is to be a good friend and had great fun discovering our new text 'The Stinky Cheese Man'.

Have a lovely weekend Cedar Class!

'The Landlord's Cat' - December 2022

Friday 2nd December 2022

This week we have been completing 'Show What you Know' tasks in class.  We have loved sharing our learning and showing just how much we have learned over the past few months.

In Maths we have started work on Geometry.  Children have been encouraged to not only name a variety of 2D shapes, but also describe the properties of that shape.  We enjoyed exploring shapes practically and this really helped us be able to accurately identify the properties.

Our Christmas Production is coming along nicely and we can't wait to share it with you next week.  The children have all worked incredibly hard and should be so proud of themselves.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday 25th November 2022

Cedar have been busy this week in English, producing a final piece of work with a focus on describing the setting.  In Maths we have been subtracting a 2 digit number from a 2 digit number using part, part whole models to help us.  We have worked hard on this and lots of children can now do this independently!  As Christmas is fast approaching, we have also been rehearsing lots for our Christmas production. The children are doing so well and we are looking forward to sharing this with you very soon.  If any remaining costumes could please be in school by Monday 28th please and please support your children with learning any lines that have been sent home.  Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 18th November 2022

It's been another busy week in Cedar class, with so many highlights!  We have loved dressing in our spots today to celebrate Children in Need (see pictures below) and have really enjoyed coming together as a key stage to rehearse for our Christmas Production.  Another highlight, was our science lesson where we thoroughly enjoyed becoming engineers and finding the most suitable material to build a bridge.  The pictures below show our finished bridges and our results!

Friday 11th November

We have had another busy week in Cedar class! Everyone worked hard to create a poem this week in English, thinking carefully about their vocabulary choices.  In Geography we learned which continent we live on and located the UK on a world map. Everybody impressed me with their ability to name different continents of the world.  On Friday afternoon we created pictures of poppies for Remembrance Day.  I look forward to sharing the outcome with you next week.

Well done Cedar class!

Friday 4th November 2022

I have enjoyed hearing all about the children's exciting half term holiday adventures this week. Below are some pictures of Jacob finding the Mary Anning display at the Natural History Museum that he visited during the break!

Everyone has settled back into their learning brilliantly and worked so hard!  We are excited to have started preparing for our Christmas Production 'The Landlord's Cat' and we enjoyed looking at the suitability of different materials for specific jobs in Science.

Well done on a great week of learning Cedar class!

Friday 21st October 2022

We have had a busy half term and the children have worked incredibly hard over the weeks!  This week we have continued our discovering about Mary Seacole and created fact files to share our learning.  We looked at a variety of fact file designs and chose our own design, deciding what information we wanted to include.  I have included photos below of the display our fact files created and I am sure you will agree the children created amazing work!  We also have shared our 'collections' with the class, inspired by our work on the American artist Mark Dion.  I have included photos of this display below for you to enjoy.

I hope you all have a fun-filled and safe half term and I look forward to seeing you all on the 31st October!

Friday 14th October 2022

Cedar class have been innovating their own newspaper reports this week, basing them on Mr. Grinling the Lighthouse Keeper having his lunch stolen by pesky seagulls!  We have worked hard to include a 'hook' in our writing so the reader can't wait to read the rest of our newspaper reports!

In Maths we have been working on counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10.  We have seen how these are represented on hundred squares and number lines.  I have included a file below which to show the images we have been sharing with the children this week.

In History, we have been comparing modern day hospitals to hospitals during the Crimean War.  There was quite a difference! We then looked at how Mary Seacole worked to improve the hospitals and make things better for the soldiers.

Well done for a great week Cedar class!

Congratulations to Juliet and Jacob who were elected to represent Year 2 in the School Council.

Friday 7th October 2022

We have had another busy week in Cedar class!  One of the many highlights of the week was learning about American artist Mark Dion.  We were inspired to find out about this artist as he creates art from collections of items, very much like the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' that Mary Anning had.

We found collections from our own classroom to create our own pieces of art and we were so enthused by our learning that many of us went home and created art from our own collections!

You can see all our beautiful collections in the photos below.

Thank you for another brilliant week Cedar Class!

We went on a materials hunt around school!

Friday 30th September 2022

We have had a busy week in Cedar class!  As you will see from the photos above, we have been exploring a range of materials in science and talking about their properties.  We are beginning to realise that some materials are perfect for certain jobs, but wouldn't be very good for others; no body wanted to wear a jumper made from cold, hard metal!

Friday 23rd September 2022

The children have worked so hard this week!  We have continued to develop our place value and number skills in Maths, in particular developing our Problem Solving and Reasoning about number.  In English we have been innovating our own stories using our model text as inspiration.  The children have had some brilliantly creative ideas and I have been really impressed with their ideas.  We have also enjoyed creating a whole class display to share with the school this week - look out for it when you are next in school!

Well done Cedar class, you are all superstars!

Friday 16th September 2022

We have had another wonderful week in Cedar Class!  We have been 'mathemagicians' in Maths and have been partitioning a range of numbers into their tens and ones.  We have continued to work on our Autumn Term Key Instant Recall Fact (KIRF) of learning all the number bonds to 20 and the children are becoming more confident with this.  I hope you are finding the same when you practice at home!

In English we have continued to explore our model text 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' and the children have explored similes and how they can be used to show a character's emotion.

Everyone enjoyed our History lesson this week, where we discovered more about the life of Mary Anning.  We explored a range of secondary resources and worked together to share our research.

Well done Cedar Class!

Welcome!

What a wonderful first week we have had in Cedar class!  The children have been wonderful all week.  They are settling in really well and have worked incredibly hard all week. In maths, they have begun to learn about place value and recognising the value of each digit in 2 digit numbers as well as ordering and comparing numbers. We also started work on our times tables in school, so please practise this at home too!  We are currently working on becoming really confident with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

In English, we are working on developing character and using this in our own stories. We learned our model text this week by text mapping it and all the children have loved using actions and pictures to support themselves.

I am so proud of the children this week, I am looking forward to next week and all we will achieve!
