    Welcome to Cedar Class!

    Classteachers: Mrs. E. Harrington/Mrs. R. Foster

    Friday 6th June 2025

What an exciting first week back we have had!  Everyone has been enjoying watching our partridge eggs hatch over the last couple of days.  This year we are looking at a wild animal so we are able to compare their needs and behaviour in comparison to the domestic ducks we hatched last year.

We have also learned a new model text in English – a fact file about a Tree Giant!  The children have enjoyed exploring the text and finding clues about what a Tree Giant might look like.

In Maths, the children have been amazing at telling the time to 5 minutes.  Our unit on Time has now finished, but please continue to work on telling the time at home.

    Have a super weekend.

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall.

    Friday 23rd May 2025

I am so proud of how much the children have achieved this half term!  They have worked so hard and produced some fantastic pieces of work that really showcase the progress they have made over the year.

In Reading, the children demonstrated their independent understanding by applying their learned knowledge of ‘Characters and their relationships’ to an unknown text.  They blew me away with their thoughtful and sensitive responses.

In Maths, we have continued to learn about time and the children are becoming more confident in reading and showing times to quarter past and quarter to the hour.

We have also begun to look at column addition in our Friday Fluency session, including how to carry our 10s and add numbers beyond 100.

    Have a fun half term!

    Friday 16th May 2025

Cedar Class have been superstars this week!  We have completed our Hot Task in English and the children blew me away with their super action stories.  I am sure they would love to share them with you during an ‘At Home’ session on Wednesdays.

In Maths we have started a unit of learning on time.  The children are doing really well at telling the time and are working hard to show the time on an analogue clock, ensuring the hands of the clock are pointing to the correct places.

In History, the children have been brilliant at understanding the impact the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb had on the world.  They reported this news in a newspaper article and everyone enjoyed creating their own newspaper names and headlines.

Well done on a super week, Cedar Class.

    Friday 9th May 2025

In Maths this week, we continued working with money and we have focussed on calculating what change is required.  This has meant the children have been subtracting, which is something lots of them found tricky.  We will continue to work on this next week. As part of this, children need to be able to mentally calculate ten more and ten less than any two-digit number.  This is something that can easily be practised at home, so any support you can give with this would be appreciated.

In English, the children have been super at completing our shared writing.  Their imaginative ideas have meant we have a very exciting action story! Everyone enjoyed exploring a range of artefacts in History and many couldn’t believe how many items were in Tutankhamun’s tomb!

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall

    Friday 2nd May 2025

Cedar Class have been superstars this week!  In Maths we have been adding together two amounts of money to find the total.  This is particularly tricky when you are dealing with pounds and pence and the children have worked hard to understand the best way to approach this.

In English, we have continued to look at the features of an action story.  We had a very exciting interview with the Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk earlier in the week (who coincidentally happened to have the exact same sunglasses as Mr. Everden!) and the children produced some super work linked to this.

In History, we learned about Howard Carter and his perseverance in searching for the tomb of Tutankhamun.  The children are loving this History unit!

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall

    Monday 28th April 2025

The children have had a super start to the summer term and have worked really hard to learn our new text map which has a focus on 'action'.

The children have also been brilliant recognising and using coins and notes.  This is something many of the children said they hadn't seen much of in today's world of modern technology, so I was impressed how quickly the children became confident in working with money.

Everyone has been excited to start out History topic on Ancient Egypt, where we will be learning about the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

Well done for a super first week, Cedar Class!

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall.

    Friday 4th April 2025

The children have finished the Spring Term on a high, with everyone producing amazing discussion HOT Tasks and being brilliant in their Statistics lessons in Maths.

We have also completed POP Tasks in Science and Geography and once again, everyone was able to showcase their knowledge and impress me with their recall of information.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter break and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 22nd April.

    Happy Easter!

    Friday 28th March 2025

We have had a very exciting week in KS1!  Our school trip was a brilliant day out for the children and the staff at Abberton Reservoir had put together a super range of activities and games for the children to help deepen their understanding of life cycles and habitats.   I have included some photos of our day below.

Once back at school, we continued our learning about life cycles by making a butterfly life cycle using pasta!  These will be on display in class for you to enjoy after Easter.

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall.

    Friday 14th March 2025

The children have worked so hard this week!  They have been punctuating speech brilliantly.  We found it tricky to punctuate speech when there was more than one person talking, but they had it cracked by the end of the week! Superstars!

In Maths we have been finding quarters of objects and quantities.  I have included some additional practice on finding quarters of quantities, as it is something we had to work really hard on.

The children all very much enjoyed making their emotion bottles in PSHE.  Thank you for your support in providing the bottles.

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall.

    Friday 7th March 2025

    Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we have been learning how to punctuate speech in English and the children have been brilliant!  We have also looked at how to include synonyms for ‘said’ and adverbs to make our writing more interesting.

In Maths, we have moved onto a unit of learning about fractions.  The children all felt confident in finding half of a shape or object, but found it more tricky to find half of a quantity.

I have included some practice of this below if you would like to complete these at home with your child.

    Have a lovely weekend,

    Friday 28th February 2025

What a first week back it has been!  As you know, we had some very important visitors in school this week and Cedar Class made me very proud! Whether it was participating in lessons, reading to our visitor or showcasing all their learning, the children were all amazing.

We have learned a new text map in English, with a focus on dialogue.  We will be learning all about how to include dialogue in our writing over the next few weeks.

In Maths, we have been using our multiplication knowledge to solve division problems, which the children have coped really well with.

We are continuing to consolidate our 5 times tables, so please continue to practise these at home, particularly division facts for the 5 times table.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall

It has been lovely to talk to so many parents at our consultation evenings this week. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.

The children have had another busy week, completing assessments and POP tasks, as well as a HOT Write in English.  They also enjoyed their last hockey lesson with Coach Cameron before moving onto something new after the half term.  I am including some photos of them enjoying their hockey lesson below.

We hope you all have a fun half term and look forward to seeing the children on Monday 24th February.

    Friday 7th February 2025

We have had a wonderful week celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’ this week.  The children have really enjoyed journaling each morning and reflecting on their emotions.  We have also set up two new stations in the classroom; ‘How are you Feeling?’ where children can share how they are feeling using the Inside Out characters and ‘I wish my teacher knew...’ where children can share information they feel they would like me to know.  Both of these are entirely optional and free for the children to access as they want or need.

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall

    Friday 31st January 2025

It was amazing to see so many parents at our Shared Learning Session this week.  Thank you for coming!  We hope you enjoyed the session; we were so pleased to read so many positive comments on the feedback forms.

In Maths this week, we have started a unit of learning on multiplication and division.  As always, the children have taken it in their stride and are achieving really well.  We will continue this for the next few weeks.

In English, we are now learning about writing a diary entry.  The children have learned a new text map and very much enjoyed the drama activities we took part in to support their deeper understanding of our new text.

Our new displays are up in school!  The children did an amazing job with their weaving to make Stinky Cheese Men!

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington and Miss Westfall

    Shared Learning - 29th January 2025

Thank you to everyone who attended our Shared Learning Session this week.  The children loved sharing their learning with you and being teachers for an hour!

    Friday 24th January 2025

We have been so proud of the children this week! They have worked so hard to get ready for our Shared Learning session with parents next week and have all written wonderful suspense stories!

We have been continuing our work on learning our five times multiplication and division facts, so we are fluent in recalling the facts as quickly as possible!  Lots of us are really confident with multiplication facts now, but are still finding the division facts a little tricky.  Please continue to support your child in learning their times tables by practising at home as much as possible.

    Have a super weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington and Miss Westfall.

    Friday 17th January 2025

This week in English, we have begun to adapt our model text to create our own stories filled with suspense.  We will continue with this next week before creating their own independent stories.  In Maths, we have continued to work with numbers to 100 to develop our understanding of the value of each digit.  This will support us in our upcoming work on multiplication and division in the coming weeks.

We are also working hard in Art to create new displays for the classroom and corridor.  We look forward to you seeing these soon!

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington & Miss Westfall

    Friday 10th January 2025

Happy New Year!  It was lovely to see all the children this week and they all had wonderful memories to share from their holidays.

We have had a really busy week in Cedar Class, but the children have been as amazing as always!  They have been super at learning their new text map which has a focus on suspense.  They have completed a variety of drama activities to help them memorise our new model text and have identified the features of suspense writing to use in their upcoming work.

In Maths, the children are working with numbers to 100 and we will be tackling the 5 times tables to become fluent in both multiplication and division facts.

Everyone enjoyed their hockey lesson with the Sports Coach this week.  These sessions do take place outside, so please ensure that your child has a warm tracksuit and suitable footwear in their P.E bag.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Mrs. Harrington and Miss Westfall.
