    Friday 6th June 2025

In English, we launched our new non-fiction topic! The children have been exploring the features of fact files and will be working towards writing their very own by the end of the unit. We also began reading our new class book, The Curious Garden, which the children are already enjoying and discussing enthusiastically. Next week is the Phonics Screening Check. We know the children will be superstars and show off their amazing reading skills. Thank you for all your support at home with reading!

In Maths, we continued our work on time, focusing on reading and understanding quarter past and quarter to on analogue clocks.

In Science, we’ve been learning about the differences between things that are living, dead, and never been alive. We also explored what a microhabitat is and why they are important. To make things even more exciting, we had a very special delivery—partridge eggs! The children are looking forward to observing the changes over the next fortnight.

Here is the sticky knowledge we have learned in Science and Geography this week. Can you teach your grown up what you have learned?

    Friday 23rd May 2025

This week in English, the children wrote their own exciting action stories, using their innovated text maps from last week as inspiration. In Maths, we began learning to tell the time to half past on the clock.

In Music, we have been learning The Friendship Song throughout the half term. I wonder if the children can remember the words and actions? Every time we sing it, the class feels uplifted, upbeat, and full of positivity.

In PSHE, we explored the importance of exercise and what happens to our bodies when we move. We learned about key parts of our body, including the heart, lungs, bones, and muscles. We also discussed how it makes us feel when we are active and how it is fantastic for our mind!

The children have also completed their POP (Proof of Progress) tasks in History and Science. They worked really hard and should be very proud of what they have achieved. These will be ready for you to see at our next At Home event.

Earlier in the week the children came home with an update on the sticky words that we have learned and which ones your child needs to continue practising. Alongside the KIRFS and reading, please do practise these at home as it makes a huge difference in their writing!

In D.T next half term we are looking different structures and materials. Please could you begin collecting cardboard boxes and tubes. I will let you know when to bring them in!

Have a fantastic break! It has been wonderful getting to know Sycamore Class — I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first half term at Myland.

    Best wishes,

    Friday 16th May 2025

This week, the children have been working on innovating their text maps with their own creative ideas. They will be writing their final pieces next week, and we are excited to see their unique interpretations!

We have started our new topic on time. Our exploration began with time-related words such as first, then, next, and before. The children learned about different units of time, including seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. We had a great class discussion about how many days are in a month.

We also introduced the concept of o'clock, which aligns perfectly with our KIRFS (Key Instant Recall Facts) for this half term. These can be found at the top of our class page. We encourage you to support their learning at home, as reading the time on a clock can be challenging in our increasingly digital world.

In PE, we have been busy completing various athletics activities in preparation for sports day. This week, with the sports coach, we focused on jumping. We thought about what would help us jump the furthest and practiced using the best technique. Additionally, with Miss Clark, we worked on throwing and catching with a partner as well as team races.

Here are the sticky words we have been focusing on this half term! Next week we will be assessing the children to see which they can write correctly.

In English, we have been actively innovating our story model together, and we have successfully written four parts of the story, with the conclusion planned for next week. Our focus has been on incorporating all elements of the toolkit while ensuring correct punctuation and finger spaces in our writing.

In Maths, we concluded our lessons on money, emphasising giving change and subtraction, and discussed the importance of quickly recalling our number bonds to support various maths skills. In the final lesson we focused on problem solving, imagining we had a set amount to spend at the shop and working out the different combinations of items we could buy and the change we would get (if any!).

In RE, we have explored different religions and their beliefs about God, fostering a respectful dialogue about different opinions and views. These religions include Buddhism, Humanist, Hinduism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

Sycamore Class have also changed their corridor display to reflect our core text this half term “The Fox and the Star.” I wonder if you saw it when visiting our classroom during the At Home event? As part of our learning about printing, we explored printing in a range of contexts. We created our own clay printing tile to create our layered relief prints.

     Wishing everyone a great weekend!

    Friday 2nd May 2025

    Dear families,

Thank you to everyone who attended the At Home event – it was lovely to meet so many families! I look forward to next week’s event and hope to meet many more of you!

This week in Maths, we continued our work on money, focusing on making different amounts using notes and coins. We even challenged ourselves by adding three coins together!

In English, we developed our 'action story' toolkit, focusing on two important techniques: writing 'rule of three' sentences and using verbs to show how a character is feeling.

During our Topic lessons, we had a fantastic time outside during Science. We explored the school grounds, identifying different plants and learning their names. We also looked closely at leaves, deciding whether they were evergreen or deciduous and recorded our findings through beautiful leaf rubbings.

In Computing, we learned how to log onto the Chromebooks and explored the keyboard. We practised using important keys such as caps lock, backspace, spacebar, and enter and had a go at typing with both letters and numbers. Can you remember where they are on the keyboard?

Thank you again for your continued support – wishing you all a wonderful weekend and enjoy the Bank Holiday!

    Best wishes,
Miss Clark, Miss Westfall and Miss Wilkinson-Rouse

    Friday 25th April 2025

    Dear families,

What a fantastic first week it’s been in Sycamore Class! It’s been lovely getting to know the children and seeing all the amazing things they can do.

In English and Reading, we’ve introduced our new texts: Jim and the Beanstalk and The Fox and the Star. The children have done brilliantly exploring the stories and learning 11 new, super vocabulary words!

In Maths, we’ve started our new topic on money, focusing on recognising coins and notes, as well as comparing different amounts.

Our Topic lessons have been full of creativity and curiosity. In Art, we explored printing techniques using materials like bubble wrap and even made our own stencils. In History, we began our journey into Ancient Egypt, getting ready to dive into the wonders of this fascinating civilisation.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead – I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again next week!

    Warm regards,
Miss Clark, Miss Westfall and Miss Wilkinson-Rouse

    Friday 14th March 2025

The children have worked very hard this week and have begun to punctuate speech with lots of success.  We have been adapting our model text to be able to write our own stories that include dialogue and the children have impressed me as always!

In Maths, we have continued to learn about fractions and the children have been finding halves and quarters of objects and quantities.

The children all really enjoyed making their emotion bottles this week.  Thank you for your support in providing the bottles.

    Have a super weekend,

    Miss Higgs & Mrs. Patrick

    Friday 31st January 2025

    Dear Parents and Carers,

It was amazing to see so many parents at our Shared Learning Session this week.  Thank you for coming!  We hope you enjoyed the session; we were so pleased to read so many positive comments on the feedback forms.

In Maths this week, we have started a unit of learning on multiplication and division.  We will continue this for the next few weeks.

In English, we are now learning about writing a diary entry.  The children have learned a new text map and very much enjoyed the drama activities we took part in to support their deeper understanding of our new text.

Our new displays are up in school!  The children did an amazing job with their weaving to make Stinky Cheese Men!

    Have a super weekend,

Miss Campbell, Miss Higgs and Mrs. Patrick

    Friday 24th January 2025

This week the children have been working hard to get ready for our Shared Learning session with parents next week and have all written wonderful suspense stories!

We have been continuing our work on learning to count fluently forwards and backwards in fives and tens.  We are getting more and more confident, but would appreciate your support practising this as much as possible at home, too.

    Have a super weekend,

Miss Campbell, Miss Higgs and Mrs. Patrick.

    Friday 17th January 202

This week in English, we have begun to adapt our model text to create our own stories filled with suspense.  We will continue with this next week before creating their own independent stories.  In Maths, we have continued to work with numbers beyond 20 to develop our understanding of the value of each digit.  This will support us in our upcoming work on multiplication and division in the coming weeks.

We are also working hard in Art to create new displays for the classroom and corridor.  We look forward to you seeing these soon!

    Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Campbell, Miss Higgs and Mrs. Patrick

    Friday 10th January 2025

Happy New Year!  It was lovely to see all the children this week.

We have had a really busy week in Sycamore Class and the children have all worked really hard.  They have been super at learning their new text map which has a focus on suspense.  They have completed a variety of drama activities to help them memorise our new model text and next week will identify the features of suspense writing to use in their upcoming work.

In Maths, the children are working with numbers beyond 20 and we will be tackling the 5 times tables to become fluent in both multiplication and division facts.

Everyone enjoyed their hockey lesson with the Sports Coach this week.  These sessions do take place outside, so please ensure that your child has a warm tracksuit and suitable footwear in their P.E bag.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Campbell, Miss Higgs and Mrs. Patrick
