It’s crazy to think we are now in the final half term of the year! Year 6s are working hard to rehearse for their end of year production. Whilst this is happening, Year 5 children have been exploring shapes and their properties. Rowan Class have turned into reporters during English lessons and we have been learning to write a detailed report about a major incident that happened at a local park. They have had to write about the victim, their family and anyone who witnessed the event. In Reading lessons, we have started to explore a book about Charles Darwin. In other areas of the curriculum, we have started to explore the features of geographical maps, fossils in Science and held mature discussions about families and what this means to us in PSHE.
Just a reminder that next week is the final week for Year 5 swimming. The following week, Year 6 will start their sessions. A letter about this will be sent to Year 6 parents/carers on Monday next week.
This week we have been learning to write a formal letter of complaint to the council. We have been writing from a parent perspective, trying to get the reader to feel the emotions and feelings so that changes are made to address some issues at the local park. This was inspired by our class novel ‘Not MY Fault’ where an accident took place in the park. Year 6s have started to rehearse for their production, learning songs and auditioning for parts.
The Year 5s have been learning how pie charts are constructed and finding the mean average from a set of statistical data.
In other areas of the curriculum, we have completed a History POP task to showcase all of our learning this half term, continued to develop coding skills using a website and equipment called micro:bit and we have discussed the difference between minor and major head injuries, knowing what to do when these incidents occur.
I have really enjoyed my first half term with Rowan Class and I hope everyone enjoys a sunny (fingers crossed) and restful half term ready for the final push towards the summer holidays.
I would like to start off by saying a huge well done to all of the Year 6s in Rowan Class for their resilience, determination and effort throughout the entire week during their SATs tests. The children have been working so hard and have done themselves and our school proud. It is nice to be able to say they can relax a bit more now and enjoy their final few months as pupils of Myland Community Primary School, creating many long-lasting memories.
This week, the Year 5 children have merged with Chestnut for Maths and Reading lessons as our Year 6s have been focusing on their SATs testing. Mr. Fulcher said the children have been working well and have shown a good understanding of statistics (Maths) and they are continuing to explore the class novel ‘Not MY Fault’ (Reading). During Writing lessons, we have continued to write action story narratives with a focus on the children planning and drafting their own content independently to showcase the learning from the past 3 weeks.
In the afternoons, where they haven’t been asked to revise, we have looked at pioneers of past times in the field of medicines and surgery. In R.E. we looked at the creation of the world, exploring the possible theories that explain this – cosmology and creationism. In Science, we continued looking at the life cycle of humans and the children produced some lovely work to demonstrate their learning so far this term.
Our year 5s have continued exploring units of measurements, looking more deeply at measurements linked to kilo and milli. In Writing, we have planned and drafted our own action stories based on a model text called ‘The Catch’. During our innovation, we have explored the possibilities of making connections to our class novel with the children coming up with plenty of ideas for an action plot and thinking about which character’s perspective they wanted to narrate the story from. In other areas of the curriculum, we have learnt about the impact sleep has on our mental and physical health and what we can do to promote a good night’s sleep. In History, we took a dive into the industrial revolution and the impact this had on people’s health. This week’s Art looked in depth at Paolozzi’s 3D model work and computing involved programming a code to control a device.
Just a reminder that next week, Year 6 will be taking their SATs tests. All of the children have worked incredibly hard revising for these and all of the adults in Year 5 and 6 are extremely proud of everyone. As I have told the children, the SATs tests are a small part of Year 6 and do not test the children on anything other than English and Maths. All we ask, is that the children try their best! Please make sure that your child attends the breakfast, which we will offer each morning, Monday-Thursday. This really helps Year 6 to start their day well. The children are invited to come into school at 8.00 a.m.
Have a restful weekend with lots of sunshine and sleep.
See you bright and early Monday morning.
This week in Rowan, our Year 6s have continued revising for their SATS tests, which are getting ever closer. Our Year 5s have been developing their sentence structure skills to enhance their action story writing. We have looked at how to effectively use questions and engaging openers to build an interesting description of an event, whilst using speech as a way to advance the action. In Maths lessons, we have been converting between different units of measure for time, mass, capacity and length. Reading lessons have focused on exploring characters and analysing them in deep and meaningful ways to build on our first impressions. In the afternoons, we have explored past-time pandemics in History, looked at the gestation period in closer detail in Science and discussed the awe and wonder of creation in RE.
This week, in Year 5, our maths work has focused on angles and the complicated language that comes with describing them! We have learned lots of facts and an associated dance to help us remember them! In English, we have really cracked punctuating dialogue and embedding it in our narrative writing.
I was incredibly proud this week of the way all of Rowan approached an RE lesson that focused on the meaning and purpose of life. It was wonderful to see some of their ambitions for the future. We have also completed some independent research this week, finding out about ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. We spoke a lot about the importance of the reliability of the internet sources we are using.
Today, it has been great to see everyone in red for Red Nose Day as well as in their odd socks to celebrate neurodiversity!
Have a great weekend.

This week, maths in Year 5 has focused on area and perimeter and I have been so impressed with how the children have been able to apply their skills to finding the area of very complex, compound shapes. We have also been learning about daily life for those who lived in Ancient Egypt, completing our own research and studying different artefacts. In Computing, we have started to look at compiling our own databases having learned how easy they can make sorting data, especially into alphabetical order and removing duplicates!
Have a lovely weekend. Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Meachen :)
Welcome back after half term! We got off to a flying start this week, with Year 6 focusing on their revision for SATs. We have also started our new text for this half term, 'Wonder' by R. J. Palacio. We have completed some beautiful watercolour portraits inspired by this. In P.E, we are completing some circuit training and trying to improve our finished. We enjoyed learning some new movements, including tricep dips and lunges!
Have a nice weekend.

We have made it to half term! It has been a very busy final 4 days which culminated in a wonderful art focused day today. It has been great to see the children’s creativity across a range of skills. At the start of the week, we completed a set of assessments to help us plan for after half term and, I have to say, I could not be prouder of the way everyone approached these and improvements are really evident across the board. The children have been great at looking for what they have done really well and also identifying any areas where they need some more work.
Well done everyone – you all deserve a very restful break!
See you after half term. 😊

This week, we finished reading 'Stitch Head' as a class and it is great to see so many children now reading other stories from this Guy Bass series.
It has also been Children's Mental Health Week this week. Everyone has been journaling daily and we really enjoyed taking part in a 'know yourself, grow yourself' gardening activity too.
In maths, we have worked with algebra which, on the face of it, some children initially thought they would find tricky but actually, we are all great pattern spotters and have been able to find unknowns using our knowledge of number.
We have lots to fit in to our final week of this half term next week, including some assessments and some persuasive writing. I look forward to seeing you at Parent Teacher Consultations next week - please make sure you have an appointment for Tuesday or Thursday.
Have a nice weekend.

We have had a real focus on writing this week and I am so impressed with the independent ‘Tales of Fear’ the children have written. These are well on their way to being published into our own books which we are really proud of. If you get a chance to pop in for our ‘At Home’ evening on a Monday, then please make sure you have a read of these in our English books. We have also started stitching our own cushions in DT this week and our needle and thread work is definitely improving! In Computing, we have been working with spreadsheets – everyone was amazed at how quickly Excel can do a calculation for us when we know the right formula!
Have a great weekend.
